The reigning Olympic and World steeplechase champion Conseslus Kiprutofrom Kenya proved why he’s the champ at the 3000m men’s steeplechase race in the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich, Switzerland.
Kipruto’s left shoe flew off in the first lap but that didn’t stop him. He went on to win Gold, finishing in in 8:10.15.
He outsprinted Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali in the final few strides after clearing the final hurdle in second place.
“I (am in) pain. I am injured because I lost my left shoe. That was a mess. But it motivated me to fight as hard as I could, so the race went well,” he said after winning the game, according to IAAF Diamond League.
Sharing a video of the race on Instagram, Kipruto said:
It was hard and painful to run without another shoe, but I just had strong spirit to never give up, the crowd was amazing and I (kept going to win).
