Nigeria must do more to fight poverty - Pastor Adeboye

Nigeria must do more to fight poverty - Pastor Adeboye
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said the recent report that Nigeria is the poorest in the world is the hypocrisy of the West against Africans.
However, he said it should propel Nigerian leaders to do more in the fight against corruption and fighting poverty. According to a report by Punch, Adeboye stated this recently in Lagos at a special prayer and thanksgiving service organised by the RCCG National Headquarters, Throne of Grace Parish.  The cleric said western countries also had the “poorest of the poor” among them but oftentimes were underreported.
He said, “you will move round some so-called developed countries and one will be shocked by the level of poverty that the people are experiencing.”
Adeboye, who spoke through his Assistant General Overseer, Personnel and Administration, Pastor Johnson Odesola, asked, “Who is doing the categorisation of developed countries and some undeveloped countries. It is the opinion of the few people whose facts can be contested. When they talk, they talk about the things that favour them and they want us to continue in the trajectory that our system is failing so that they will continue to benefit from our failures.”
Still, he urged the government at all levels to use the report as an opportunity to double their fight against the scourge of poverty and inequality ravaging our country.

Togolese opposition leader, Nicodeme Habia enters day 10 of hunger strike

Togolese opposition leader,?Nicodeme Habia enters day 10 of hunger strike
Nicodeme Ayao Habia, president of an opposition party in Togo today entered the 10th day of his hunger strike saying “physically I’m very weak but spiritually and mentally I am strong”.
Habia lies on a mat in front of the Ghanaian embassy in Lome, where he is demanding the release of protesters who have been detained for months after demonstrating against the ruling regime.
“Doctors come every day, I get seen by them. The rest is up to me. If I can make this sacrifice for change in my country, I should do it. I don’t fear for my life, what’s important for me is the release of the prisoners. I’m here to show the world what’s happening in Togo” he says.
The West African bloc ECOWAS stepped in early this year to negotiate between Togo’s government and the opposition after months of protests with people calling for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe. The opposition parties had obtained the release of about 40 people arrested in connection with protests and 10 others were released in early September.
However, according to the leaders of the coalition of 14 opposition parties, there are still 44 people languishing in Togolese prisons who are yet to have their case heard in court. The minister of justice maintains that their situation will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
So far, Habia has refused to break his fast, only drinking water to stay alive.  On Monday, he was visited by police. “When they arrived, they told me to get out quickly and knowing my rights, I resisted and turned back. I’m not here to hurt anyone. I’m here to call attention to the national and international community for the release of my compatriots"  he said.

USA overtakes Russia and Saudi Arabia for the first time in 45 years to becomes the world's largest oil producer

US?overtakes?Russia and Saudi Arabia for the first time in 45 years to?becomes the world
The United States has risen to the top the list of oil-producing countries for the first time in almost 45 years.

The US overtook Saudi Arabia for monthly crude oil production back in February and likely surpassed Russia some time in June or August, new data shows which comes after the development of fracking led to a boom in shale oil production while massively reducing drilling costs.

The figures are based on preliminary estimates published by the US Energy Information Administration last week. If confirmed, it would mark the first time since 1973 that the US has topped world rankings.

The agency said it expects the US to hold its position at the top of the chart for the remaining months of 2018 and throughout 2019.  After languishing at less than 6million barrels of oil per month between 2000 and 2011, American oil production began rapidly increasing from 2012 onwards.

That figure has now almost doubled in the last six years, though there was a dip between 2014 and early 2016 when the price of crude plunged and oil companies were forced to scale back operations.

At the center of the boom is Texas, and in particular the Permian Basin in the west of the state. The Lone Star state now produces so much oil that it would be ranked third in the world on its own if it were a country, outstripping the likes of Iraq and Iran.

A change in the law allowing US companies to export crude oil for the first time in 40 years also came into effect in 2015, further boosting production.  Meanwhile, the US has climbed up the rankings in terms of energy security because it relies less on foreign imports to meet its needs.

Brazilian Police seizes $16m in Cash & Wristwatches from Equatorial Guinea’s VP Delegation

About $16m in cash and luxury watches were intercepted from a delegation with Teodorin Nguema Obiang, the vice president of Equatorial Guinea.
Teodorin is also the son of Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the country’s president.
Estadao reports that Brazil’s federal police seized the cash and watches after searching their private plane which arrived at the Viracaspos airport near Sao Paulo on Friday.

About $1.5m cash was found in one bag and $15m worth of luxury watches was found in another bag.
Brazilian law prohibits people from entering the country with more than 10,000 reais ($2,424) in cash.
According to Estadao, an official of the Equatorial Guinea Embassy in Brazil, who was with the delegation at the time, the money was for Teodorin’s medical treatment and hotel expenses during his stay in Brazil.
The official, the report added, said the luxury watches, engraved with Teodorin’s initials were for his personal use.
Teodorin’s belongings were not searched as he was the only one with diplomatic immunity among the delegation.
Teodorin has been accused of embezzlement of public funds, using it to fund a lavish lifestyle. In 2017, he was sentenced to a three-year suspended sentence on charges of embezzlement of public funds and money laundering.
Teodorin’s father Teodoro has ruled Equatorial Guinea for about 39 years.

Twin Brothers become Millionaires after creating Cryptocurrency in Mum's Kitchen | BellaNaija
Brothers Steve & Sam Williams, founders of Populous
Twin brothers Steve and Sam Williams have become multi-millionaires after launching what is one of the world’s leading crytocurrencies.
What’s more impressive was that their crytocurrency – Populous – was designed and created in the kitchen of their mum who emigrated to the UK from Nigeria.
Evening Standard reports that Populous, which helps small and medium-sized businesses with cash flow, is ranked the 51st most valuable crytocurrency in the world – out of about 2000.
The brothers have a rough history, growing up in a neighbourhood rife with gang violence. Steve said:
It was very tough in terms of gang violence. You had no choice: you either got bullied or you pretended to be part of one of the gangs to safeguard yourself.
But they grew out of that and are now worth, thanks to the 16 million Populous “tokens” they own, about $55.3 million.

NYSC Certificate Saga: Court slates Oct 8 to hear suit against Kemi Adeosun
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 8 to hear a suit asking it to sack the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, from office for not possessing a valid discharge certificate issued by the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

The Chief Judge of the high court, Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, has assigned the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/712/2018, to Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu for expeditious hearing. He wants the court to compel the 1st defendant to refund forthwith to FG, through the Treasury Single Account domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria, all the salaries, emoluments, allowances and such other benefits she has enjoyed since her resumption as a Minister in 2015.
Other defendants in the suit are the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and Clerk of the Senate.

As well as, “Whether the appointment of the 1st Defendant by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria] and the subsequent confirmation of same by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are not a nullity and therefore liable to be quashed and set aside being acts done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in violation of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended? Upon determination of the questions, he sought for,
“A declaration of this Honourable Court upon an intimate reading and complete understanding of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the 1st Defendant is NOT qualified to be employed by the Federal Government of Nigeria either as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or in any other capacity whatsoever without first presenting a valid discharge certificate issued by the National Youth Service Corp.
“A declaration of this Honourable Court that the appointment of the 1st Defendant by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria] and the subsequent confirmation of same by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are a nullity and therefore liable to be quashed and set aside being acts done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended?
“An order of this Honourable Court quashing and setting aside the appointment of the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the same being an act done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended “An order of this Honourable Court quashing and setting aside the confirmation of the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria carried out by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the same being an act done in circumvention of a condition precedent and in contravention of mandatory Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. “An order of perpetual injunction of this Honourable Court restraining the Federal Government of Nigeria from further considering, nominating, appointing, screening and or confirming the 1st Defendant as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any other government position howsoever named or described until she presents a valid certificate of discharge regularly issued by the National Youth Service Corp in view of Sections 12, 13 and 14 of the National Youth Service Corp Act which is an integral part of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended”. Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri reveals the only person who can make him quit smoking
Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri who is a chain-smoker has revealed the only person who can make him quit smoking.
The 59-year-old Italian who was known for chain-smoking on the touchline and smoke about five packs every day during his time in Italy, says the only one person who can make him even think about quitting is his father, Amerigo.
Sarri told Il Mattino: 'When my father learned I had this offer (from Chelsea), he told me to go to London, that it was the right thing to do.
'He did ask me to stop smoking at least while I'm here. He is the only one who for five minutes can make me wobble in my convictions.'
Due to the fact that smoking is prohibited inside English football stadiums, Sarri has been forced to abandon his matchday habit, and only uses what appear to be plastic cigarette filters.

'I am a proud feminist who embraces her femininity' – Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji declares

Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji has openly declared she's a proud feminist who embraces her femininity.
The actress made this known in an interview with Women and Hollywood Magazine, a media orgnaisation that educates, advocates, and agitates for gender diversity in Hollywood and the global film industry.
She said: 'I’m a proud feminist who embraces her femininity. I feel sometimes women are made to feel self-conscious and ashamed of their womanhood. Perhaps like “Wonder Woman,” we may wake up one day to discover that it is our superpower, and then we would be unstoppable.”
When asked to name her favorite woman-directed film and why. Genevieve Nnaji said;
“Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.” It was powerful and strong, and at the same time, feminine and sexy.
Speaking on the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, she said: “How quickly the oppressed have risen to the top, and yet the train has not stopped. If anything, they continue to create amazing content.”
History has shown that in almost every situation where a group of people or a demographic is being oppressed, it’s usually because the oppressors are threatened by the potential of the oppressed to be great. I’m happy women all over the world are discovering their superpower and turning “why me?” into “not me.”

Naomi Osaka has become the first Japanese woman to win the US Open after beating her idol Serena Williams.
Osaka won the match in straight sets, beating Serena 6-2, 6-4.
Osaka’s first US Open win was, however, marred by controversy after Serena protested being penalized by the umpire.
First, she had been issued a warning after her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, gestured to her. She told the umpire, Carlos Ramos, she “never cheats.”
A few games later, she got a point penalty after breaking her racket. She then called the umpire “a thief,” claiming he stole a point from her, and was given a game penalty afterward.
Serena called the game referee and supervisor, saying the penalty was not fair. She said:
There are men out here that do a lot worse, but because I’m a woman, because I’m a woman you’re going to take this away from me? That is not right.
Serena Williams after getting penalized because she called judge a "thief" "There;s a a lot of men who have said things and because they are men nothing happens to them"....
Serena, after the match, urged the crowd to celebrate Osaka’s win as she played well.
