Facebook changes name to Meta

Facebook changes name to Meta

Facebook has changed its name to "Meta".

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Facebook, announced the name change in a statement issued on Thursday, October 28.

According to him, the change of name will reflect the company’s efforts on rebranding its future operations.

"To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta," Zuckerberg said.

He continued: "Our mission remains the same — it’s still about bringing people together. Our apps and their brands aren’t changing either. We’re still the company that designs technology around people.

"But all of our products, including our apps, now share a new vision: to help bring the metaverse to life. And now we have a name that reflects the breadth of what we do.

"From now on, we will be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first. That means that over time you won’t need a Facebook account to use our other services. As our new brand starts showing up in our products, I hope people around the world come to know the Meta brand and the future we stand for."

Facebook’s rebrand follows as the social media giant continues to work towards building its futuristic "metaverse", a virtual-reality space in which users interact with a computer-generated environment and other users.

In his statement, Zuckerberg added: "When I started Facebook, we mostly typed text on websites. When we got phones with cameras, the internet became more visual and mobile.

"As connections got faster, the video became a richer way to share experiences. We’ve gone from desktop to web to mobile; from text to photos to video. But this isn’t the end of the line.

"The next platform will be even more immersive — an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse, and it will touch every product we build."

On the defining features of the virtual reality space, Zuckerberg also said users will be able to connect with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, and create in a manner distinct from how people think about computers presently.

"In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up"  he said.

"This will open up more opportunities no matter where you live. You’ll be able to spend more time on what matters to you, cut downtime in traffic, and reduce your carbon footprint."

Cristiano Ronaldo 'has added to Man United's problem of being a team of individuals - Jamie Carragher says

Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher believes Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United has actually added to the squad's problem of being a team of individuals.

Ronaldo returned to the club from Juventus in the summer on a two-year contract, and has since scored five goals in five games.

He was named as a substitute for last Saturday's Old Trafford clash and while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought him off the bench after 57 minutes, the Red Devils were held to a 1 - 1 draw.

Sir Alex Ferguson including many others criticized the Norwegian for his decision to start Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for Manchester United's draw with Everton.

Reacting to the situation at the Manchester United, Ex-Liverpool defender Carragher told The Telegraph: 'They remain a team of individuals rather than a team. Cristiano Ronaldo has added to that rather than fixed it. That’s why, despite a brilliant squad, they are not yet at the level of the other three.

'Dropping five points in their last two home games highlighted lingering inconsistency.'

Carragher added that champions Manchester City remain the team to beat in the Premier League after the opening seven games of the season, despite Champions League winners Chelsea being top of the table by a point heading into the international break.

'They (City) are still the team to beat,' he says. 'There was a question mark against them after failing to replace Sergio Aguero, but it is business as usual for Pep Guardiola.

'They have gone to the two toughest venues and taken four points, justifying being favourites to win it again. They will take some stopping.'

India to pay $674 compensation for every death caused by covid-19

India's supreme court has approved the government's decision to pay 50,000 rupees ($674) as compensation for every death due to Covid-19.

The Supreme Court's order followed a petition by the country's lawyers seeking compensation under India's disaster management laws.

India has officially recorded more than 447,000 Covid-19 deaths so far but experts believe that up to 10 times more people could have died in the pandemic.

On Monday, October 4, Justice MR Shah said the "next of kith and kin of the deceased person" shall be paid this compensation. This would be "over and above the amounts paid by the centre and state under various benevolent schemes", he said.

The court added that the compensation should be paid within 30 days after a family submits an application.

The announcement comes after petitioners in June sought the court's intervention in paying compensation to the families of Covid-19 victims.

They said since Covid-19 was "specially" notified as a disaster under India's National Disaster Management Act, compensation should be paid to the victims.

The 2005 law was enacted for efficient management of disasters, including preparation of mitigation strategies, capacity-building and compensation for lost lives, injuries and damaged properties.

The law says monetary assistance of 400,000 rupees should be paid to family of people who have lost their lives in a disaster.

According to the Indian government, the compensation will be paid "to the next of kin of the deceased due to Covid-19, subject to cause of death being certified as Covid-19" as per the guidelines. The funds for this compensation will be provided by the states.
