Nigeria Medical Association explains why doctors are leaving the country

Nigeria Medical Association explains why?doctors are leaving the country
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has attributed poor remuneration and inadequate health facilities as some of the major reasons for mass exodus of medical doctors from the country.
Dr Ekpe Phillips, the FCT Chapter NMA Chairman, said this at the opening of the Annual Health Week of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Abuja where described the pay package of doctors in Nigeria as poor, stressing the need for government to increase the remuneration of doctors to address the challenge.
He noted that many doctors who left the country to take up foreign appointment did so due to inadequate facilities among other factors. He listed mass unemployment, lack of placement for residency faced by a high proportion of medical professionals in Nigeria as other factors.
Phillips said Nigeria is losing doctors to foreign countries, adding that Nigerian doctors are leaving the country for greener pastures and the workload is becoming too much on the doctors that stay.
“We hear doctors collapsing because the workload is too much because their colleagues have left to find a greener gesture. We have internal and international brain drain; Nigeria now has one doctor catering for 5,000 patients instead of one doctor to 600 patients.
Brain drain is now becoming pandemic and sad news because government did not and still is not doing enough; there is no serious commitment to stemming this syndrome. Nigeria which was one of the richest 50 countries in the early 70s has metro greased to become one of the 25 poorest countries in the World today,’’ he said.

Dr Michael Olarewaju, the President of Association of Residents Doctors, FCT chapter, said that brain drain was a massive problem to Nigeria’s health system. He said that if the problem was not properly tackled in the next two to three years there would not be enough doctors to treat patients in the country. He observed that initially the problem in the sector was strike by health workers “but now they are not going on strike but are exiting the country’’.

Three Chinese contractors arrested for attempting to bribe investigators in Kenya's mega 'railway scam'

Three?Chinese contractors arrested for attempting to bribe investigators in Kenya
Three Chinese nationals have been charged with attempting to bribe investigators working on an alleged ticketing scam in a massive Kenyan railway project.
Some $10,000 (£8,000) a day was being stolen in the scheme and officers were allegedly offered a $5,000 bribe, the prosecutor says. The $3bn Chinese-funded and operated railway line is Kenya's biggest infrastructure project since independence in 1963.
It has, however, been hit by scandals since it launched in May 2017. The three Chinese nationals: Li Gen, head of transport, Li Xiaowu, security manager, and Sun Xin, staff member, work for China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
They were arrested on Friday as they attempted to bribe investigators, but it is unclear how long the alleged fraud had been going on. They however deny the allegations.
They appeared before a judge in the port city of Mombasa who ruled that they remain in custody until their bail hearing is heard on 30 November. The alleged ticket fraud involved triggering refunds and diverting the money elsewhere, according to a report in the Daily Nation newspaper.  The loss of an estimated $10,000 a day is almost a third of daily earnings from last year's passenger service.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba confirms his retirement from football after 20 years

Finally,?Chelsea legend Didier Drogba?confirms his retirement from football after 20 years
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has confirmed his retirement from playing, ending "an amazing 20 years".
The 40-year old Ivory Coast striker had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games, winning four Premier Leagues and the 2012 Champions League. He spent the last 18 months of his career with US side Phoenix Rising, the club he co-owns.  "After 20 years, I have decided to put an end to my playing career," he told BBC World Service's Sportshour.
It had been expected Drogba would retire after the United Soccer League Cup final earlier this month, with his last game a 1-0 defeat by Louisville City in the final of the United States' second tier.
"It's the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop. To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game." Drogba did not play top-flight football until the age of 23, when French side Guingamp signed him from Ligue 2 Le Mans in January 2002.  He moved to Marseille 18 months later and the following year completed a reported £24m move to Chelsea, where he had the best spell of his career.
Drogba won three Premier League titles in his first eight years at Chelsea, including in each of his first two seasons in England, as well as four FA Cups and two League Cups.  He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006-07 and 2009-10.
He left on a high, scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final shootout against Bayern Munich.  Drogba then spent six months with Shanghai Shenhua and a year and a half with Galatasaray before returning to Chelsea.
He scored seven goals in 2014-15, winning a fourth Premier League title and a third League Cup, leaving the club as their fourth highest scorer of all time.  In 2015, he joined Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact and then became player-owner of Phoenix Rising. He scored 65 times in 105 caps for the Ivory Coast, playing in three World Cups and being named African Footballer of the Year twice.

Goodluck Jonathan reveals those behind his defeat In 2015, accuses Obama of meddling in the election

Goodluck Jonathan reveals those behind his defeat In 2015, accuses Obama of meddling in the election
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, has revealed those behind his defeat in the 2015 presidential election.
In his newly released book, titled: “My Transition Hours” which is being launched today Tuesday November 20th to commemorate his 61st birthday, Jonathan stated that former governors of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who defected to the then opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) because they were “blinded by ambition” and a barrage of “fake news,” cost him his bid to be reelected for a second term in office.
“This time around, there were governors who were rounding off their eight years tenure and were blinded by ambition,” he wrote about his re-election bid in 2015 having been overwhelmingly voted for in the 2011 election. Some governors wanted to be Vice President whilst others strived to be the President. If I contested none could realize his ambition. This muffled implosion would fully manifest in the buildup to the 2015, which each ship-jumper calculating how much he or she would take from the PDP or the most opportune moment to cause maximum damage and based on that, plot their exit.
“As they jumped ship in preparation for the 2015 elections, only very few of this lots, if any at all, bothered about what the PDP did or did not do in terms of delivering our campaign promises. Their opposition to my re-election was principally driven by personal ambition. They therefore played up the issue of where I come from and the faith, I professed to fuel their burning ambition. My performance mattered quite little, if it mattered at all,” he wrote.
The Former president said that in a twist of fate, most of the governors and other prominent members of the former ruling party who plotted against him are now being victimized in the APC.
The Former president in his book, accused ex-US President, Barack Obama, of interfering in Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election. According to Jonathan, Obama during the heat of the election, sent his secretary of state, John Kerry, and made a video broadcast to Nigerians in ways designed to influence the outcome of the election against him. He described the actions of Obama as “humiliating”.
“I can recall that President Obama sent his Secretary of State to Nigeria, a sovereign nationto protest the rescheduling of the election. John Kerry arrived in Nigeria on Sunday January 25, 2015 and said ‘it’s imperative that these elections happen on time as scheduled’. How can the US Secretary of State know what is more important for Nigeria than Nigeria’s own government? How could they have expected us to conduct elections when Boko Haram controlled part of the North East and were killing and maiming Nigerians? Not even the assurance of the sanctity of the May 29, 2015 handover date could calm them down. In Nigeria, the constitution is very clear. No President can extend his tenure by one day.
“On March 23, 2015, President Obama himself took the unusual step of releasing a video message directly to Nigerians all but telling them how to vote. In that video, Obama urged Nigerians to open the ‘next chapter’ by their votes. Those who understood subliminal language deciphered that he was prodding the electorate to vote for the opposition to form a new government. The message was so condescending, it was as if Nigerians did not know what to do and needed an Obama to direct them.
“In his message, he said ‘all Nigerians must be able to cast their votes without intimidation or fear,’ yet his government was vehemently and publicly against the postponement of the elections to enable our military defeat Boko Haram and prevent them from intimidating voters. This was the height of hypocrisy!”

Everton youngster Ademola Lookman snubs Nigeria pledges future to England

Everton youngster Ademola Lookman snubs Nigeria, pledges future to England?
Everton youngster, Ademola Lookman, who was born in England to parents from Nigeria, has snubbed his home country to play for the English side.
The young footballer reportedly pledged his future to England after holding face-to-face talks with Under-21 head coach Aidy Boothroyd over stories linking him to Nigeria.
This comes weeks after Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr who is preparing his squad for next summer's Africa Cup of Nations said he 'wanted to change his mind so he can play for us as he will add something to our team'.
England Under-21 head coach Aidy Boothroyd confirmed on Tuesday evening the youngster who was part of the Under-20 squad that won the World Cup in 2017 has pledged his future to his birth country.
"Every time I see him I have a little joke with him about it,' said Boothroyd. 'I say: "Why would you want to leave us?"
'But he's very focused on England – that's what he tells me. He says he wants to play international football for England.'
Speaking  Lookman's difficult year after moving to Germany to join RB Leipzig on loan before returning back Everton, Aidy said:
'He's had a tough time of it, but he's been better recently,' said Boothroyd. 'He got himself into a state over summer when he didn't know where he would be playing or if he would be moving or not. Now he has just got his head around the fact that wherever it is he is playing, he has to play well.
'He has told himself "I just have to focus on me" which is right. When you look at Dominic Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tammy Abraham, Reiss Nelson, Ryan Sessegnon and Ademola, we have some real attacking talent.'

"We don't need you to give us money just provide the enabling environment" - Ali Baba tells President Buhari

Legendary Nigerian comedian, Ali Baba has written a note to President Buhari urging him to create an enabling environment and enact policies that will promote the arts sector.
'Like we told those before you, Mr President, we don’t need you to give us money. Just provide the enabling environment, nd we will be the ones to give you money' he wrote.
He went on to say, 'let the government make a deliberate attempt to promote the arts. Piracy laws. Structure for enforcement of those laws. Film villages. Museums. Creative fora. Cinemas.
Promotion of culture and tourism just like you promote crude oil.... then we will show you the money.
Sir, you see all these meetings you are having, we have held them before... plus several breakout sessions. Only to be forgotten. And remembered just at the dawn of another election.
