The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi will sign a treaty declaring Salvador in Bahia, Brazil, a twin city to Ile-Ife, Osun State.
According to Vanguard, the bill had been passed by the Congress of Salvador, and the Ooni is expected to sign on behalf of the Yoruba people around the world.
The treaty has been described by Ayo Omidire, the Director, Institute of African Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, as an opportunity for cultural exchange and artistic and economic empowerment.
A statement released by the Ooni’s Palace read:
The treaty is for the entire Yoruba race. Ile-Ife was mentioned specifically being the headquarters of the Yoruba race. So as Ife is the recognised ancestral home of the Yoruba people, Bahia is henceforth seen as the headquarters of Yoruba race in Americas. All Yoruba speaking states will benefit from the opportunities listed in the agreement.
