Drug dealers sentenced to death and killed immediately in front of school children in China

Drug dealers sentenced to death and killed immediately in front of school children in China
A couple of drug dealers were sentenced to death then executed immediately in front of school children to serve as a deterrent to the children.

The criminals were sentenced to death by shooting and immediately marched to a firing squad as part of a government crackdown. School children were made to watch the execution.

Pan Hui, a teacher from the local Yunlong Middle School, told China News that such events could help "educate" and "frighten" the students, and they could also make the students fearful of committing crimes.

"Our school has been carrying out anti-drug educational campaigns constantly to keep the students away from drugs," said teacher Pan.

Around 300 residents of Haikou, in southern China’s Hainan Province, were also in attendance at the execution, which was filmed and posted online. The move was part of the government’s campaign known as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on 26th June each year.

The first criminal, 39-year-old Cai Liqun, was found guilty of selling methamphetamine and magu. The latter is a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, and is a relatively new type of drug in China. The other criminal, 36-year-old Huang Zhengye, was found guilty of transporting and selling methamphetamine. He was caught in possession of 4,749.8 grams (10.47 pounds) of methamphetamine and 71,100 yuan (£8,143) in relation to drug dealing.

A total of eight people were sentenced to death that day.

Homeless Belgian couple found $350000 gave it away, and now they are on trial for money laundering

Homeless Belgian couple found $350,000, gave it away, and now they are on trial for money laundering
A homeless Belgian couple found €300,000 (around $350,000) in an abandoned building where they were squatting and they were generous enough to share the money with friends and people who had helped them in the past. But they are now on trial for money laundering.
The couple, whose names have been given only as Joey, 32, and Kimberley, 33, found the money in an old Singer sewing machine while squatting in an abandoned building. Local police discovered that the couple had found the money after the property of a friend with whom Joey and Kimberly were staying was searched during a drug raid. Joey was found to have €50,000 ($57,000) in cash on him, The Guardian UK reports.

Homeless Belgian couple found $350,000, gave it away, and now they are on trial for money laundering

After learning about the cash, the prosecutor’s office in the Belgian city of Ghent brought up money laundering charges against Joey and Kimberly. Apart from the couple, the nine friends who received the money are also being prosecuted.
The prosecutor said:
They shared the money as well-wishers. But of course you cannot hand out money that is not yours. And the people who took the money should have known that Joey and Kimberley could not have come by such sums of money in a normal way.
The couple’s lawyers told the court that their clients had planned on buying a house with the money, adding that the investigation itself is void.
The prosecutor’s office in the Belgian city of Ghent is seeking 18-month suspended prison sentences and fines of €6,000 ($6,900) for Joey and Kimberly. The judge is expected to give his decision in two weeks.

How 12-year-old girl stopped train from killing over 300 people in Zimbabwe

How 12-year-old girl stopped train from killing over 300 people in Zimbabwe
A 13-year-old girl has been rewarded by the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) for averting a train disaster that could have killed at least 300 people when she was only 12.

Nozipho Sibanda, a form one pupil of Entumbane High School in Zimbabwe, saw a broken railway line in Sawmills last September, an hour before a Bulawayo-bound train from Victoria falls was set to pass. The girl rushed to inform the station manager at Sawmills railway station and station manager stopped the train that was due to pass on that track within an hour. At the time, she was a 12-year-old Grade Seven pupil at Sawmills Primary School.
In appreciation of her life-saving act, last Friday the NRZ went to her school and committed to pay her school fees until she completes secondary school. The NRZ also guaranteed her a place at its training school in Bulawayo should she wish to be enrolled there.
NRZ Regional Marketing Manager Mr Joseph Temai commended Nozipho for her sense of responsibility.
He said:
She saved over 300 lives in a passenger train that was coming from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo. She did something that some adults may have failed to do. As part of our whistle blowers programme, we decided to give her a small token of appreciation as a gesture to show gratitude to her family and her school for cultivating such good habits in a child.
It was midweek in the morning and she was on her way to school. She noticed that part of the railway line was broken and she went to notify the station manager before going to school. It shows the kind of family and home that she was brought up in.

Mr Temai said property worth millions of dollars were saved and the lives of about 300 passengers were spared because of Nozipho's act.
He said:
She helped to save the Government’s and taxpayer’s money. Another person may not see the value of this as one may not see themselves as a beneficiary of railway services. When one considers that our food is transported via rail, our coal for electricity is transported via rail and other goods and services, it is important to note that we are all beneficiaries.

World Health Organization says video game addiction is a mental disorder

World Health Organization says video game addiction is a mental disorder
The World Health Organization on Monday classified "gaming disorder" as a mental health condition.
The condition described as ‘gaming disorder’ will be added to the 11th edition of WHO’s International Classification of Diseases.

The U.N. health agency said classifying "gaming disorder" as a separate addiction will help governments, families and healthcare workers be more vigilant and prepared to identify the risks.  But the agency and other experts were quick to note that cases of the condition are still very rare, with no more than up to 3 percent of all gamers believed to be affected.

Dr. Shekhar Saxena, director of WHO's department for mental health and substance abuse, said the agency accepted the proposal that gaming disorder should be listed as a new problem based on scientific evidence, in addition to "the need and the demand for treatment in many parts of the world."
Dr. Joan Harvey, a spokeswoman for the British Psychological Society, warned that the new designation might cause unnecessary concern among parents.
"People need to understand this doesn't mean every child who spends hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise medics are going to be flooded with requests for help," she said.
Others welcomed WHO's new classification, saying it was critical to identify people hooked on video games quickly because they are usually teenagers or young adults who don't seek help themselves.
"We come across parents who are distraught, not only because they're seeing their child drop out of school, but because they're seeing an entire family structure fall apart," said Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a spokeswoman for behavioral addictions at Britain's Royal College of Psychiatrists. She was not connected to WHO's decision.
Bowden-Jones said gaming addictions were usually best treated with psychological therapies but that some medicines might also work.
The American Psychiatric Association has not yet deemed gaming disorder to be a new mental health problem. In a 2013 statement, the association said it's "a condition warranting more clinical research and experience before it might be considered for inclusion" in its own diagnostic manual.
Dr. Mark Griffiths, who has been researching the concept of video gaming disorder for 30 years, said the new classification would help legitimize the problem and strengthen treatment strategies.
"Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view," said Griffiths, a distinguished professor of behavioral addiction at Nottingham Trent University. "Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score whereas gamers use points."
He guessed that the percentage of video game players with a compulsive problem was likely to be extremely small—much less than 1 percent—and that many such people would likely have other underlying problems, like depression, bipolar disorder or autism.
Griffiths said playing video games, for the vast majority of people, is more about entertainment and novelty, citing the overwhelming popularity of games like "Pokemon Go."
"You have these short, obsessive bursts and yes, people are playing a lot, but it's not an addiction," he said.

Mr. Chris McAllister, Managing Director of BAT Nigeria with Chief Kola Jamodu, Chairman Board of Directors, BAT Nigeria Foundation

British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATN Foundation) unveiled its 4 year plan, to invest seven hundred million Naira (N700, 000,000) to support smallholder farmers, young agric-preneurs and agric-related government interventions. This announcement was made at the unveiling of the Foundation’s 2018 - 2022 Country programme.
The strategy for deployment is simple, fund rural agriculture enterprises to move farmers from subsistence to commercial farming; create young agric-preneurs by promoting a commercial mindset towards agriculture; ensure human skills development for the adoption of good agronomic practices and provide access to markets to promote viable and sustainable businesses.
“If we get it right in Agriculture, Nigeria would be unstoppable, but In the era of modernization, many farmers struggle with the pre-requisite needed to move from small scale to large scale agriculture and the inability to transit, threatens their ability to rise out of poverty” observed Chris McAllister, the Managing Director of BAT Nigeria; “As a responsible organization, BAT Nigeria will continue to provide funding and other necessary assistance to the Foundation to ensure that it is able to constantly support agricultural enterprises and improve the livelihood of those living in rural communities”.
“It is our belief that the Country Programme launched today would move Nigeria a thousand steps closer towards achieving the 2030 United nations sustainable development goals were livelihoods are improved, poverty is eradicated and there is zero hunger. A Nigeria that is safe for you and I, where entrepreneurial dreams come true and we all thrive, reaching our full potential, while ensuring ‘No One is Left Behind’” said Abimbola Okoya, the Executive Director of BATN Foundation.
All agriculture related institutions, the government, NGOs CSOs and development partners, the Foundation would work with in this four year period, are encouraged to leverage on the grant being made available to ensure the realization of the set objective – to empower rural Nigeria for a sustainable future
British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation was established in 2002 To improve the lives of those living in rural areas, with special emphasis on smallholder farmers, their families and communities. '' It’s confusing for Buhari to honour Abiola and admire his tormentor-in-Chief, Sani Abacha'' Soyinka says in front of Buhari

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka today told President Buhari that honroing late Chief MKO Abiola and praising his ''tormentor in chief'' was quite confusing.
Prof. Soyinka spoke at the Presidential Villa during the conferment of posthumous award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on the presumed winner of the June 12 presidential election, the Late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
Though the Nobel Laureate did not mention any name, his words pointed to the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha who President Buhari had praised in recent times. Speaking at the event, Soyinka said
“I would like to make a request Mr President that you stop creating confusion in the minds of Nigerians. Stop confusing Nigerians.  It is not possible to honor MKO Abiola in one breathe and and then admire his tormentor in another breath. Loyalty is all very well but that loyalty can become perverse if that loyalty is retained to an individual who if he were alive today, would be before the international court of crimes against humanity, one who broke the laws of Nigeria, committed crimes humanity. It is confusing if professional loyalty is carried so far.
We had a private conversation sometime ago and remember that one of the things I mentioned to you was this, You are fighting corruption, how come it that a notorious corrupt ruler is honored by one of the most important avenues in the FCT. The answer you gave to me was not too satisfactory but I let it pass. Today perhaps is also a day for us to inaugurate our hall of shame to future generations'' he said

After 20 years, Yahoo messenger will shut down finally on July 17

After 20 years, Yahoo messenger?will shut?down finally on July 17!
Yahoo Messenger, one of the first instant messaging service has announced that it will shut down on July 17.

Yahoo made the announcement on its website, where it said the service can be used normally only until next month.

Read the full statement below...
A while back we announced that we had completely modernized the technology that powered Yahoo Messenger. We made significant upgrades to key areas like photo sharing, made the service faster and more secure.

With the new platform, we were also able to build new types of messaging products and integrations. For example, our recently announced group messaging product, Yahoo Squirrel, aimed at improving the productivity of messaging, is based on this platform. Note: Yahoo Squirrel is invite-only still, but we will be opening it up to everyone shortly.

While there are many big messaging services today, just as in many things, the next phase of disruption in messaging is right around the corner. That is where we as engineers, product managers and designers have shifted our focus.

So as we continue to build and innovate products on our new messaging platform, we are announcing today that we will retire Yahoo Messenger, effective July 17, 2018.

Yahoo Messenger has had an amazing run. Over its twenty years, Yahoo Messenger introduced hundreds of millions of people to the joys of just the right emoticon for the moment (aka emojis). Yahoo Messenger changed the lives of millions, and thousands of people have sent us letters and photos over the years to share their stories of meeting a spouse over the service, keeping in touch with kids while serving overseas in the military, or introducing grandparents to new members of the family from across the globe.

We are thankful to the hundreds of millions who have used Messenger over the years as well as the thousands who have worked on it inside Yahoo for more than two decades.

''Obasanjo was not elected as President in 1999, he was appointed'' MKO Abiola's daughter says

Tundun Abiola who is one of the daughters of the presumed winner of the 1993 Presidential election, MKO Abiola, was a guest on Rubbing minds yesterday to discuss the recent honor done on her Father's memory by President Buhari.

Last week, President Buhari announced that June 12th will become the official democracy day and that the highest honorary title, GCFR, will be conferred posthumously on Abiola.

Speaking during her interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Tundun criticised former president Olusegun Obasanjo for failing to recognise her father who was elected unlike him that was appointed.
''Obasanjo was appointed the president, he was not elected president. We did not have any election in 1999, we had a coronation. When you know you were not elected, you know you were selected and just appointed president by the military, it is galling for him to have acknowledged a democratic process. President Obasanjo and my father had a relationship then; so what happened in their lifetime continued even after my father was dead. He cannot bear the idea of Moshood Abiola – so he did not do it,” she claimed
