United Nations peacekeepers leave Liberia after 15 years

Finally, United Nations?peacekeepers leave?Liberia after 15 years
UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) finally concluded a 15-year mission in the one-time war-torn country, describing its operations as a success.

The UN said the peacekeepers were departing a “stable and grateful Liberia” as peacekeeping mission in the country formally ceased operations on Friday after aiding Liberia’s transition from ravaging civil war to a hopeful era of peace.

The conclusion of the 15-year operation follows a landmark election that resulted in the country’s first transfer of power from one elected president to another in 70 years.  The newly elected President, George Weah, spoke for many Liberians as he thanked the UN for helping to make that possible.

“In our darkest days, the UN stood with us,” Weah said in his inaugural address in January.  Weah, a former football star, won the presidency in a runoff election in December, succeeding Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who had served since 2006. Speaking at an event recently in Monrovia to mark the completion of the peacekeeping mission, Weah pledged that the good work of the UN would not be forgotten.  “We will not fight again, we promise you,” the new president said.

Liberia, the first independent country in Africa, enjoyed nearly a century and a half of stability before falling into chaos, enduring two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003.  By some reports, more than 250,000 Liberians were killed and nearly a third of the population was uprooted while 80 per cent of Liberian women and girls suffered conflict-related sexual violence. The Security Council established the peacekeeping mission for Liberia in October 2003, as violence lingered even after warring factions agreed to a cease-fire and a plan for political rebuilding.  As peacekeepers first arrived, “the entire country was in turmoil,” Lt.-Gen. Daniel Opande, the pioneer Commander of UN forces in Liberia, said, adding: “People were moving from place to place, looking for safety or for food”.

A newly secure environment enabled more than a million refugees and internally displaced persons to return to their homes.  The Government established its authority throughout the country and by now has successfully held three presidential elections.  According to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Nigerian troops were the military backbone of (UNMIL), from 2003 to 2018 while about 20,000 Nigerians served in Liberia, with more than 1,500 women.  However, their service did not come without sacrifice as 200 peacekeepers lost their lives due to illness, accidents or other causes while serving in Liberia.  With peace elusive in many regions where UN forces have been deployed for years, the auspicious conclusion of the Liberia mission represents a success for UN peacekeeping, which has 110,000 men and women deployed in 15 operations worldwide.  UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Mohammed, noted during her visit to Liberia recently that a generation ago, Liberia was in “free-fall”.  According to her, “the closure of UNMIL marks the transition of all three countries to peace and democracy.”

In a sobering statement to the Security Council in New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the successes of peacekeeping in West Africa.  The UN chief, however, highlighted the “serious challenges” that confront ongoing deployments in several other African countries and called for advances in military equipment and preparedness on the limits and roles of UN peacekeepers.  “Put simply, peace operations cannot succeed if they are deployed instead of a political solution, rather than in support of one,” he said.  In Liberia, a broadly shared commitment to a new, democratic political order was an essential key to progress.

The 2017 presidential election, which led to the victory of Weah, was a collective success for all Liberians, said Farid Zarif, the former Afghan diplomat who has served as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of UNMIL for nearly three years. “It was a culmination of all the hard work that was done in post-conflict Liberia – on the part of the people of Liberia, the political leaders, the media, the civil society organisations,” Zarif said.  One of UNMIL’s core mandates was to help the Liberia National Police build its capacity to take over security responsibilities.

In July 2016, the UN handed over all security tasks to the Liberian authorities – a benchmark on the path to the March 2018 full withdrawal of the mission.  Bintou Keïta, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, saw first-hand the results of the years of mentoring, training, and capacity-building.  She said during a recent visit to Liberia: “One proof that it worked is that there was no such huge violence during the preparations for the election.”

With stability restored and UNMIL planning to exit, the mission partnered with local organisations on development projects that could improve the lives of the Liberian people.  A series of “quick impact” projects were carried out across the country, including sustainable farming, agriculture, baking collectives, recycling, climate action, and urban development.  Yacoub El Hillo, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Liberia, said that the projects are an example of ongoing UN support for sustainable peace and development.  “It is true that UNMIL is closing, but through projects like these, new openings are being made possible for Liberians to go further,” said El Hillo, who will stay on as the UN Resident Coordinator, working with numerous UN agencies whose development work in Liberia will carry on.

Despite all of its achievements, Liberia still remains fragile on many fronts, noted Special Representative Zarif adding “We should not just presume that everything is fine and leave the country without any assistance.”  “Liberia is going to continue to require the solidarity, the support, and help of the international community for the long haul but they have already started demonstrating that they are the ones who are responsible for the future of their country.”

Moscow says it will close US consulate in St Petersburg and expel same number of diplomats from nations that have expelled Russians

Moscow says it will close US consulate in St Petersburg and expel same number of diplomats from nations that have expelled Russians
Russia is on a retaliation spree. Moscow has said it will expel 60 diplomats and close the US consulate in St Petersburg in retaliation for the expulsion of Russian diplomats over the poisoning of an ex-spy in Britain.
This announcement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He said Russia would expel the same number of diplomats from the nations that have expelled Russian diplomats over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, 66, and his daughter Julia, 33, in Salisbury earlier this month.
Lavrov said that Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador, had been informed of "retaliatory measures" on Thursday.
Lavrov added that the same will go for other nations that expelled Russian diplomats this week.

Moscow says it will close US consulate in St Petersburg and expel same number of diplomats from nations that have expelled Russians

After the poisoning of Skripal, who was a Russian double agent, and his daughter in England, Britain expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the UK. Moscow retaliated by also expelling 23 British diplomats from Russia. Then America, in support for their closest ally, expelled 60 diplomats and shut down the Russian consulate general in Seattle. Russia has now replied in kind.
Two dozen countries, including the US, many EU nations and NATO, have ordered more than 150 Russian diplomats out this week in a show of solidarity with Britain.

DMX gets lighter sentence after his lawyer played his song in court to sway judge during sentencing

DMX gets lighter sentence after his lawyer played his song in court to sway judge during sentencing
Apparently, rapper DMX got a lighter sentence after a judge heard his rap song in court.
During the rapper's recent sentencing, his attorney played the judge "Slipping" an old rap song by DMX and it is believed this helped reduce his sentencing from a possible 5 years in jail to only 365 days.

DMX gets lighter sentence after his lawyer played his song in court to sway judge during sentencing

Below is how Boston 25 is reporting it:

"A judge heard a DMX rap song before adding his own lyrics to a court proceeding on Wednesday, ordering the rapper imprisoned for a year in a tax fraud case.
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff took requests, accommodating DMX's desire to hear his autobiographical hit "Slippin'" before DMX faced the music over his admission of guilt. The judge called DMX's fraud a "brazen and blatant" crime that could not go unpunished.
The 47-year-old rapper, known to law enforcement and the courts as Earl Simmons, has been incarcerated since his bail was revoked in January. He sobbed during the proceeding as his lawyer Murray Richman recalled his nightmarish childhood...
His lawyer said DMX, who has appeared in movies such as "Last Hour" and "Romeo Must Die," has been a model prisoner. Still, prosecutors sought five years in prison for him, citing a lengthy rap sheet and drugs. But Richman said he wanted his client free to support his 15 children and pay back nearly $2.3 million in taxes that are part of a restitution order.
Another defense lawyer, Stacey Richman, called DMX "the American dream," saying he raised himself out of the ghetto with music that was so inspirational that a former Troy homeless woman called the lawyers to say that hearing one of his songs stopped her from killing herself. The woman now is married and raising a child, Stacey Richman said.
As "Slippin'" played in the packed courtroom, DMX nodded his head slightly to the beat while some of his supporters nodded more enthusiastically.
Murray Richman got choked up as he spoke of his client, saying he felt terrorized after listening to DMX describe his childhood to a probation officer for six hours.
"I've never seen a more horrific background in my life," he said, describing physical and psychological abuse that left DMX's teeth knocked out and led him to repeated encounters with the law at an early age.
The judge said that in the court's view DMX "is a good man."
"In many ways," the judge said, "he's his own worst enemy."

South Africa let me down during my impeachment - Robert Mugabe

South Africa let me down during my impeachment -?Robert Mugabe
Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe says South Africa should have sent troops instead of a team of negotiators to prevent his ouster by the military last year.
Mugabe said his regional neighbours betrayed him “in a sense”, in an interview with the privately-owned Zimbabwe Independent newspaper and other regional and international media.
“When you look at their conditions, except for South Africa, they haven’t got the capacity to intervene. But South Africa could have done much more. It did not send an army, but just to engage” the 94-year-old is quoted as saying.

Mugabe who ruled Zimbabwe since independence from British colonial rule in 1980 was forced to quit when the military stepped in and ruling ZANU-PF lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against their once beloved leader. He was replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, a favourite of the military, whom Mugabe had fired weeks earlier as his deputy in a move seen as paving way for his wife Grace to take over.

South Africa’s then-president Jacob Zuma had sent defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the then state security minister Bongani Bongo to intervene in the impasse between Mugabe and the military.

Mugabe, who once quipped that he would rule until he turned 100, described his departure from office as a“coup d’etat. Those who created it have the responsibility to reverse it. If they don’t want to reverse it, it means they want the situation to continue which I think is the case.  “They would want us perhaps to get to the national election when the environment is still very congested with fear, some people still hiding, displaced” he said in the interview.

Since his dramatic reversal of fortune, Mugabe has largely stayed out of public life.

African migrants are worse than terrorists, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says

African migrants are worse than terrorists, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that the flood of illegal migrants from Africa are worse than terrorists in the Sinai peninsula.
Netanyahu said this while speaking at an event celebrating the Negev region held in Dimona. The PM said that Israel has recently completed a fence along "more than 200 kilometers of the border with Sinai." He said the border fence constructed along Israel’s border with Egypt is holding back a potential "flood" of illegal migrants from Africa.
Without the fence, "we would be faced with … severe attacks by Sinai terrorists, and something much worse, a flood of illegal migrants from Africa," Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu's comments come on the heels of Israel's campaign to deport thousands of African migrants in the country. The interior ministry says there are currently some 42,000 African migrants in Israel, mainly from Sudan and Eritrea, and the government has ordered that thousands of them must leave or face indefinite imprisonment.

Ex- French President, Nicolas Sarkozy arrested for receiving €50 million from Libya's Muammar Gaddafi to finance his 2007 campaign

Ex- French President,?Nicolas Sarkozy arrested?for receiving ?50 million from Libya
Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy has been arrested and in police custody since Tuesday for questioning by magistrates looking into allegations of Libyan funding for his 2007 election campaign.

France opened a judicial inquiry in 2013 into allegations that Sarkozy’s successful 2007 election bid benefited from illicit funds from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.  A former minister and close ally of Sarkozy,Brice Hortefeux, was also being questioned by police on Tuesday morning in relation to the Libya investigation, another source close to the probe said.

Sarkozy, who served as president from 2007 to 2012, has always denied receiving any illicit campaign funding and has dismissed the Libyan allegations as “grotesque”. In January a French businessman suspected by investigators of funnelling money from Gaddafi to finance Sarkozy’s campaign was arrested in Britain and granted bail after he appeared in a London court.

Sarkozy has already been ordered to stand trial in a separate matter concerning financing of his failed re-election campaign in 2012, when he was defeated by Francois Hollande.

In the statement issued to CNN, the Social Media Network called the ad "disgusting" and said they are looking into the controversial case.

Daniel Ives, chief strategy officer and head of technology research at GBH Insights, told CNN that it's a big challenge for Snap.
"Social media platforms continue to have troubles with catching all offensive ads and content as we have seen from the likes of Facebook and Twitter," Ives told CNN. "Snap dropped the ball on this ad."
He added: "This is a make or break [year] for Snap and although we believe it's heading in the right strategic direction, the Rihanna backlash and ad is another gut punch for this company to make sure they minimize the speed bumps ahead."

Lagos Police arrest over 100 people involved in violent clash at Ojota garage

Lagos Police arrest?over 100 people involved in?violent clash at Ojota garage
The Lagos State police command have arrested no fewer than 100 persons allegedly involved in a violent clash between two unknown groups at the Scavengers Land near New Garage, Ojota.

The state Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mohammed Ali, made the disclosure on Friday saying the arrested persons have been transferred to the Taskforce Office, Oshodi, Lagos.

The two groups were scavengers gathering and selling unserviceable items at a place called “Igidanpani.  The clash forced shops in the New Garage and some parts of Ojota to close.

“We don’t really know what caused the crisis. We were surprised to see people scampering. It started on Thursday but the police brought the situation under control. The groups started again today, forcing shops in the area to close,“ a vulcanizer, who identified himself simply as Adeshina, told NAN in Ojota.

Police reveals appalling details of foiled terror attack that would have killed hundreds of Kenyans

Police reveals appalling details of foiled terror attack that would have killed hundreds of Kenyans
Kenyan Inspector General of Police,  Joseph Boinnet, on Wednesday, revealed chilling details of the recent foiled terror attack, which is said to be one of the most successful arrests in recent times.
The terror suspects arrested in Isiolo last month, one of whom had booked a hotel room for almost a week near the Central Police Station, were targeting the Judiciary buildings and a government installation.

Mr Boinnet said that the vehicle with registration number KBM 200D that was seized from the suspects in Merti, Isiolo County, was laden with approximately 80kg of high-grade Trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosives.
The police boss revealed that the vehicle, which would have been used as a Suicide Vehicle Bound Explosive Device (SVBIED), was set to be driven to Nairobi and would have killed hundreds of innocent civilians.
A police investigation revealed that one of the suspects, Abdimajit Adan, 24, had booked a hotel room near the Central Police Station 10 days earlier, and only travelled to Merti on the day he was arrested, leaving a note to the hotel management pleading for them to reserve the same room for him because he would be back.
He was arrested alongside Mohammed Nane on Thursday, February 15, after a brief exchange of fire.
Police found five AK-47 assault rifles, 1,099 rounds of ammunition, and 36 fully loaded magazines in their car. A third suspect was killed at the scene in Yamincha, while two others escaped.
It emerged after the vehicle was towed to Nairobi for scrutiny that the suspects had laced it with eight projectiles and shrapnel materials around its body.
Each of the ranged weapon, according to Mr Boinnett, contains approximately 10kg of TNT.
The shrapnel in it include ball bearings meant to maximise causalities when it explodes.
“Typically, terrorists prefer ramming an SVBIED on a gate or main entrance to the target. To avoid premature detonation.” he said during a press conference outside the DCI Headquarters’ Forensic laboratory.
“This allows the second team of terrorist armed with AK47 assault rifles to stage a siege inside the target building,” Mr Boinnett added, giving an example of the Kulbiyow and El Adde attacks where the SVBIED were used to stage attacks.
The police boss said if the terrorists had been successful, the SVBIED would have caused a high magnitude explosion that would have brought down a building frontal structure while the explosion wave would have killed hundreds of Kenyans.
“The bomb would have destroyed buildings, vehicles, and infrastructural structures nearby besides killing hundreds of people within a radius of 250 metres,” he said.
An expert attached to the Bomb and Hazardous Disposal Unit explained that just a kilogramme of TNT can cause destruction in up to 11 metres radius from the epicentre. The recovered explosives weighed 100kg in total.
“The explosion would also cause massive traffic disruption and such an outcome would allow for another attack to take place,” Mr Boinnet said.
The objective of the destruction and murder, the police boss said, was to spread fear, attract attention of local, regional and international media and to embarrass government security forces so that they overreact and appear repressive.
The police had three days after arresting the suspects in Merti, nabbed two more suspects and found them with receipts of two motorcycles.
