41-year old German nurse, Niels Hoegel admits killing over 100 patients in a period of 5-years

41-year old German nurse, Niels Hoegel admits killing over 100 patients in a period of 5-years
On Tuesday, former nurse Niels Hoegel admitted to killing 100 patients in his care, on the first day of his trial in the biggest serial killing case in Germany’s post-war history.

41-year old Hoegel has already spent nearly a decade in prison on a life term for other patient deaths, and is accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment. As the proceedings opened in the northern city of Oldenburg, presiding judge Sebastian Buehrmann asked whether the charges against him were accurate.

Hoegel replied quietly “yes. What I have admitted took place,” he told the courtroom crowded with dozens of grieving relatives. Buehrmann said the main aim of the trial was to establish the full scope of the murder spree that was allowed to go unchecked for years at two German hospitals.

“It is like a house with dark rooms we want to bring light into the darkness,” he said. After a minute of silence in the courtroom for the victims, Hoegel listened impassively, his head lowered, as public prosecutor Daniela Schiereck-Bohlmann read out the name of each dead patient and the charges against the defendant.

Prosecutors say at least 36 patients were killed at a hospital in Oldenburg where he worked, and about 64 more at a clinic in nearby Delmenhorst, between 2000 and 2005. More than 130 bodies of patients who died on Hoegel’s watch have been exhumed, in a case investigators have called “unprecedented in Germany to our knowledge”.

One of the more than 100 co-plaintiffs in the trial, Christian Marbach, said it was a scandal that Hoegel had been allowed to kill with impunity for such an extended period of time without hospital authorities or law enforcement intervening. Investigators say the final toll could top 200 but fear they might never know for sure because the bodies of many possible victims were cremated.

Hoegel appears to have followed a similar procedure each time, first injecting a medication that triggered cardiac arrest, followed by an often futile attempt at resuscitation. Prosecutors say he was motivated by vanity, to show off his skills at saving human lives, and by simple “boredom”.

€5 Billion vanishes from frozen Gaddafi accounts in Belgium after €10 Billion initially went missing

?5 Billion vanishes from frozen Gaddafi accounts in Belgium after ?10 Billion initially went missing
The UN is investigating the alleged embezzlement of up to €5 billion that disappeared from accounts owned by Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan leader, according to Belgian MP Georges Gilkinet.
“UN documents confirm that Belgium failed to comply with a UN resolution on freezing Libyan assets,” he told the Belgian news network RTBF.

He said that so far, he had received fragmented information from Belgian authorities and that is vital “to clarify the situation, which may lead to a big scandal, because hundreds of millions of euros were sent to unknown individuals in Libya who were not known.”
RTBF also cited an anonymous source claiming that since 2013 the missing assets from the accounts have allegedly been used to “finance a civil war which led to a major migration crisis.”
In Belgium, the probe which is headed by investigator Michel Claise comes amid reports that a portion of Gaddafi’s assets could be sent to the Libyan Investment Authority, a sovereign fund.
Furthermore, a special UN report also suggested that the money was received by the Libyan Investment Authority. As reported by Sputnik, its complex structure makes it almost impossible to find out what these funds were allocated for.
“The sum could have been sent to armed groups in Libya, something that further destabilized the region,” according to the report.
This comes after in March 2018, local media reported that around €10 billion of Libyan government funds, which were frozen as part of the sanctions against Gaddafi’s inner circle had vanished from a Belgian bank between 2013 and 2017.
Back in November 2013, four Euroclear Bank accounts belonging to the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) and its subsidiary Libyan Foreign Investment Company (LFICO) in Bahrain and Luxembourg, contained some €16.1bn in frozen assets. However, when authorities tried to seize the funds in 2017, it turned out there was only just over €5bn left in those accounts, an investigation by Le Vif weekly revealed.
“There remains a little less than 5 billion euros on the four accounts opened at Euroclear Bank SA,” Denis Goeman, a spokesman from Brussels’ prosecutor’s office told the Belgian publication. Michel Claise was initially the first to discovery that the funds were missing.
He was in charge of the probe into alleged money laundering by Gaddafi’s inner circle, requested the seizure of the frozen Libyan funds.
After the death of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the UN ruled that his assets should be frozen in four Belgian banks. However, it turned out later that interests and dividends from these assets have never been blocked.
Belgium’s finance ministry insisted that the interest payments were legal, Le Vif’s investigation in March is certain that authorities must answer several crucial questions, the biggest one being: Where did the €10 billion vanish to?
The probe by the UN and Michel Claise into the suspected illegal disbursement of interests and dividends on frozen accounts comes after months of denial from Foreign Minister Didier Reynders and silence from the rest of the cabinet. There has been little progress since the discovery of the initial missing €10 billion.

Nigerian government to impose a fine of $4000 on overstaying foreigners

Nigerian government?to impose a fine of $4000 on overstaying foreigners
The federal government has introduced strict punitive measures against foreigners who overstay their visa approved days in the country. Depending on the number of days, foreigners who breach visa deadline may pay from $200 (N72, 000) to $4000 (N1.8million) as sanctions for attempting to beat the system.
Inside Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) sources confirmed to THISDAY that this policy has been implemented by the Ministry of Interiors, which also expects to generate huge revenues for the federal government.  For effective implementation of the policy, the federal government has ceded to Concec Limited the concession to generate money from this policy and since the implementation, as approved, foreigners travelling outside the country and those still staying have paid to legalize their stay in Nigeria.
“This policy has been implemented and it is not a secret. It is even on the notice for everyone to see. But Nigerian Immigration Service is not directly in charge; a company known as Concec Services Limited is in charge, though it is under Immigration. So this is punitive measure but if you wish to regularise your stay you pay for it. It is stated in clear terms,” Immigration official said.
So government through the Ministry of Interior is using this new regime to monitor the movement of foreigners, but the new policy does not involve visitors from ECOWAS nations. A document recently signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior and made available to newsmen indicated that a foreigner would be adjudged to have overstayed in the country if he exceeded the number of days approved for him in the visa he obtained from Nigeria.
The document, which was obtained from the Ministry, indicated that a Non-ECOWAS visitor who intended to stay in Nigeria for a period exceeding 56 days, but not beyond 90 days aggregate would be sanctioned with a fine of $200 or the naira equivalent. For a Non-ECOWAS visitor who stayed in Nigeria beyond 90 days, but not exceeding 180 days aggregate would be sanctioned with the sum of $1000 or its naira equivalent. Besides, any Non-ECOWAS visitor who intended to stay in Nigeria or who stayed for a period exceeding 180 days, but not beyond 365 days aggregate in the country would pay to the government the sum of $2000 or its equivalent.
Also, any Non-ECOWAS visitor who overstayed in the country without authorization or regularisation would pay penalty equivalent of $4000. An informed source has revealed that several foreigners, especially from China, Malaysia and Indonesia, had been sanctioned by the government for violating the orders.

FRSC says dropping of waste from moving vehicles now attracts a fine of N5000 fine in Lagos
The Lagos State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a warning to commuters to desist from throwing wastes out of moving vehicles, saying defaulters may be sanctioned with N5,000 fine.
The statement was issued by SP Adedotun Abayomi, an officer of the Command in a recent interview saying the command would intensify its efforts in curbing the unwanted situation, stating that there was an initial sanction and fine on anyone caught in the act, which could cause accidents on the roads.
“Dropping off things from a moving vehicle is totally wrong and it is an offence known as ‘failure to cover unstable materials’, and it comes with N5,000 fine. People need to stop throwing things off moving vehicles, drivers should encourage their passengers to use the dustbin in the vehicle instead of throwing them out,’’ he said.
Abayomi stated that the Command has received lots of complaints from the street sweepers in the state expressing their dissatisfaction on account of such act which according to them could lead to fatalities.

Five corpers kidnapped on way to camp in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States

Five corpers kidnapped on way to camp?in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States
On Wednesday, unknown gunmen kidnapped five members of the National Youth Service Corps who were travelling to their orientation camps in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states. Two other passengers on the bus conveying the corps members were also kidnapped.
The fresh graduates and the other victims were travelling from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to Rivers and Akwa Ibom states where they were billed to undertake their three-week NYSC orientation, when they kidnapped on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway and taken to the Umuapu forest in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

Briefing journalists after the victims were rescued by the police, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Imo State Police Command, Dasuki Galadanchi, said the kidnappers established contact with the families of the corps members and demanded N5m ransom. The CP gave the names of the corps members as Abiola Temitope, Olubisi Adekanmi, Jose Temitayo, Folarin Opeyemi and Shonibare Ademola.

Other victims were identified as Leonard Uzondu and Raymond Ojodahe. The CP said, “The victims were travelling from Ibadan to Port Harcourt. Five out of the seven of them are prospective corps members. They were on their way to the NYSC orientation camps in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states for the three weeks camping.
“They were kidnapped around 5am on Wednesday at Umuapu, on the Owerri-Port-Harcourt Expressway. The kidnappers took them to a forest and dispossessed them of all their belongings, including money, phones, ATM cards and voter cards. They compelled them to call their relatives at home to speak to them. Immediately contact was established, they instilled fear in the parents and demanded N5m for their freedom.”
The CP explained that through intelligence gathering, the operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the command were alerted.  He said, “The operatives went into the bush and on sighting the officers, the kidnappers abandoned their victims and fled. We rescued them unhurt, but the hoodlums made away with their valuables. This is part of the dividends of community policing. I urge Imo State residents to keep sharing information with the police. We cannot do it alone.”
Galadanchi said he had ordered investigation into the incident with a view to arresting the fleeing suspects.  One of the victims, Abiola, said, “They stopped our bus and ordered us at gunpoint to follow them into the forest. They were five with guns and machetes.
“In the bush, they took our belongings except our credentials and ordered us to call our parents. They made a demand of N5m, but they later brought it down to N3m. They ordered us to close our eyes. They were even quarrelling on how to share our personal belongings which they took from us. It was in the process that the police intervened and they abandoned us and ran away.”

Over half a million protesters march in London to demand new vote on Brexit

Over half a million protesters march in London to demand new vote on Brexit
Today, more than half a million people from across the United Kingdom gathered in London for a protest march opposing the nation’s pending departure from the European Union.
The march, which organizers said drew more than 600,000 people to west London’s Park Lane, was called by People’s Vote, a group campaigning for the public to have a say on a final Brexit deal to prevent the ruling Conservative government from forcing it through Parliament.
A meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels this week, at which an agreement was to have been struck, instead ended with major hurdles to be overcome. As the March 29, 2019, deadline when Britain is to leave the EU draws closer, the twists and turns in negotiations have the general public divided, investors and businesses anxious and the pound weaker.
“Some of the promises made two years ago, clearly have not materialized. Nobody was talking about a bad Brexit deal, nobody was talking about no deal whatsoever.  The British public should have a say on whether they accept the outcome of those negotiations, with the option of staying in the EU” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in comments posted on the group’s website before the rally.

Lionel?Messi substituted 15-minutes into the game after breaking his arm during Barcelona
After creating one goal and scoring another, Lionel Messi was replaced in the first half of Barcelona's LaLiga game against Sevilla this evening.
The Argentina superstar scored Barca's second with a gorgeous 20-yard finish after a swift breakaway in the 12th minute, but he fell awkwardly soon after in a coming together with Sevilla's Franco Vazquez.
He was given medical attention for several minutes on the touchline, with Barca's physios putting a significant amount of strapping around his right elbow. Initially it looked as though he was going to attempt to carry on, but after having his arm tended to, he laid back on the floor looking resigned to his fate.
He soon trudged away and down the tunnel, with Ousmane Dembele replacing him. It could be a particularly crucial injury given the importance of Barca's upcoming games against Inter in the Champions League and Sunday's El Clasico clash with Real Madrid.
Messi is Barca's top scorer so far this season, with his first-half effort against Sevilla his seventh in nine LaLiga outings.

Angry women storm a bar in Kenya to kick out beautiful waitress they accused of snatching their husbands

Angry women storm a bar in Kenya to kick out beautiful waitress they accused of snatching their husbands
A group of women stormed a bar in Sagana, Murang’a County, Kenya to kick out a pretty waitress they accused of sleeping with their husbands.

The women, some with babies strapped to their backs, sang songs against the barmaid they claimed had made their husbands to run away from home.

Some of them even accused the woman of befriending both their husbands and sons.
Passers-by were treated to the evening drama as the women bayed for the blood of the bar attendant, vowing not to move until the woman was forcibly ejected from the premises.

The drama went a notch higher when their husbands got out of the bar to prevent their irate wives from getting in.

The couples pushed and shoved as amused residents watched. The men blocked the entrance of the bar as they engaged their wives in a shouting match.

Finally, men overpowered the women and saved the bar attendant from their wrath.
Satisfied that their message had been put across, the women retreated, but not before complaining to the public about the behaviour of their husbands.

They blamed their men of being too busy and spending nights in the bar located along Murang’a-Sagana road.

The women claimed the bar attendant was a threat to families for allegedly befriending men working in sand harvesting sites and their sons in the boda boda sector.

One of them said her husband has been away for a week after eloping with the bar attendant.

“I am bitter that my husband has abandoned his family for no apparent reason,” she said, adding that he lied to her that he was stranded in Nairobi only to discover he was in the liquor outlet.

But men defended the bar attendant and accused their wives of being “arrogant and dirty.”

“No amount of intimidation will make men in Kabuta to leave the village beauty.” one said.

“They should learn from her on how best to live with men. These women from our neighbouring county are beautiful and Kabuta girls should learn a few things from them,” he added.

Local administrators calmed the protesting women and summoned bar operator to explain the cause of the conflict.

After the confrontation, the owner of the bar sacked the bar attendant to avoid damage to his business.
