Medical doctor arrested over death of DPO in Lagos
The Lagos State police command has arrested a medical practitioner for the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the state. According to reports, the deceased, a former DPO in Igando area of the state, was redeployed to Amuwo Odofin police post. Late last year, the DPO was injured in his arm during a faceoff with some hoodlums. He was said to be treating the dislocation in a traditional clinic, but the wound did not heal.
Following the severe pains he was having, some of his friends advised him to try orthodox treatment and he was said to have taken the complaint to his medical doctor friend at Igando. The doctor was reported to have given him injection, following which, the DPO collapsed and all efforts to revive him proved abortive as he gave up the ghost.
A senior police officer at the Igando police station where the doctor is being detained said: “We are investigating to find out if the doctor gave him the right medication. We also want to find out if the doctor is qualified. The DPO went to the hospital on his own, it was not as if he was rushed to the hospital.”

Ambode okays N30,000 monthly stipends for 1,000 interns
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the payment of N30,000 as monthly stipends to Ready.Set.Work (RSW) interns who have been placed in various organisations for six-month paid internships.

The Governor also approved N8million in seed funding for the top five winners of the RSW Business Pitch Competition, whose businesses will be placed in incubation, while the beneficiaries will commence their internships and incubation, respectively, on March 1st, 2018.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh in a statement on Sunday said the interns were part of the 2,000 final year students from six tertiary institutions in the State who took part in the 2017 edition of the 13-week intensive Entrepreneurship and Employability training programme.

He said that the Ready.Set.Work programme, which held its pilot in 2016 with 500 final year students from three tertiary institutions in Lagos State, was scaled up in 2017 to 12,000 Students from six institutions including Lagos State University, University of Lagos, Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos State College of Health Technology, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education.

“In 2016, we placed 76 students in internships with partner organizations like PwC, SystemSpecs, Total, GTBank, FCMB and Access Bank, to mention a few, who provided 6-month paid internship opportunities for RSW graduates. His Excellency, the Governor, further expanded the scheme by approving funds to place an additional 100 RSW graduates in internship positions with SMEs across Lagos State, with monthly stipends provided by the government.

“In 2017, we were able to scale up and secure internship slots in about 180 organisations across the State for 1,000 top performing RSW graduates. The placement process involved a series of Internship Fairs at which companies had the opportunity to interview and select their interns from a pool of qualified candidates,” Bank-Olemoh said.

He also disclosed that preparation for Ready.Set.Work 2018 has commenced, adding that the programme would be expanded to train 25,000 while 5,000 final year students would participate in the 13-week face-to-face classes and that 20,000 students in their penultimate year would take part in the RSW Online Academy.

Besides, Bank-Olemoh said the programme was also increasing the number of participating schools to accommodate more students in the programme, among which are Yaba College of Technology, Federal College of Education (Technical) and a private institution, Caleb University.

The Special Adviser added that the inclusion of new schools was in line with Governor Ambode’s commitment to ensuring that every student that graduates from any tertiary institution in Lagos State is prepared for the world of work as an employer of labour or a value-adding employee.

Bank-Olemoh also called on professionals from different sectors to join the RSW Faculty, the largest volunteer faculty in Nigeria, as facilitators for the 2018 training programme, adding that the RSW Faculty recruitment would kick off officially on February 22nd, while the application portal will be accessible on the programme website - www.readysetwork.com.ng.

Sunday Oliseh suspended by Netherland club after four straight loses and he reacts

Sunday Oliseh suspended by Netherland club after four straight loses and he reacts
After four straight losses, Netherlands’ second tier side Fortuna Sittard has suspended former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh for what it describes “unacceptable actions”.
The club statement said, "several attempts by the club to encourage a change in the coach’s behaviour have unfortunately not worked, resulting in an unworkable situation. The board of Fortuna Sittard emphasizes that the decision to suspend Sunday Oliseh is not motivated by the current sporting performance. The coach’s unacceptable actions have made cooperation between many people within the organization impossible from players to employees. Fortuna Sittard regrets the decision, but states that the club interest goes above all else.”
Oliseh in his reaction to the sack took to Twitter to say, 'I confirm: Due to my refusal to participate in Illegal activities at Fortuna sittard & violate the Law,i have been Suspended from my duties as Coach by the Foreign Owners of Fortuna.Unfortunate for the lovely fans, my players & our hard fought phenomenal positioning for Promotion'.

Jacob Zuma announces his resignation as South Africa's president

Jacob Zuma announces his resignation as South Africa
President Jacob Zuma, 75, has heeded the call by the ANC’s top decision-making structure, the NEC, by publicly announcing this evening at the Union Buildings in Pretoria that he will resign as the state leader.
“I do take seriously and am grateful to the ANC for ensuring a better life for all. I was also elected in terms of section 86 of constitution and from that moment pledged my commitment to the constitution. It has been a great learning experiencing, the performance of which can never be done without learning," he said.
“None of us can claim the building of a new society and marshaling of former liberation movement…that it all happens in a straight line. It has detours and human errors and boulders strewn along the path.”
“I understand full that wile I serve at the pleasure of my party the ANC…the door through which I officially came is through thr national assembly, without which no political party can impose its electorate on the state. As we fight our own battles in the corridors of political power, serving our very interests and serving our oppressors of yesterday who joyfully celebrate as we lynch one another, we forget the citizens for which we create a better life.”
"I am not above reproach," Zuma said, adding that in his political responsibilities he was not the epitome of perfection and that he respected the prefix of the constitution. Zuma also said that he did not take up the role of president to enjoy the benefits of the office or the perks.
“Make no mistake no leader should seek an easy way out, simply because they could not see life without the perks that come with the the office,” he added.
Zuma’s  announcement follows that which was made by the party’s secretary general, Ace Magashule, yesterday at the organisation’s headquarters, Luthuli House in Johannesburg, at a press briefing, that the NEC took the decision to recall Zuma.
Magashule said the resolution taken by the NEC was in accordance with the ANC’s “rule 12.2.21.2 of the party’s constitution, which accords the NEC the authority to recall any public representative.”
The secretary-general stated that the party was resolute that recently elected ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa will take over from Zuma and be the one to deliver the state of the nation address (Sona).
The Sona was postponed from February 8 – Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, said at the time the decision to push back the Sona was based on fears of disruptions. However, the postponement was in no doubt influenced by ANC internal power struggles, with the NEC calling for Zuma to step down as the country’s president.
Several meetings have been held by the ANC’s NEC and NWC for over a week to discuss Zuma’s resignation following his repeated refusal to do so on request from these party structures.
On Monday, the NEC convened a special meeting at the Saint Goerge Hotel in Pretoria to discuss Zuma’s future.
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule said the decision to recall Zuma was taken “only after exhaustive discussion on the impact such a recall would have on the country, the ANC and the functioning of government.”
He further said the resolution had not been taken because Zuma had done any wrong but because the organisation is of the view that state and party leadership should be aligned.
On Monday, opposition parties called on Mbete to reschedule the motion of no confidence in Zuma a week ahead from the initially planned February 22.
However, yesterday Magashule said some of the issues the NEC had to consider during its meeting regarding Zuma’s resignation were “the opportunistic manoeuvers by the opposition in parliament including motions of no confidence in the President, calls for dissolution for parliament and other desperate acts.”
He said the decision about who would deputise Ramaphosa now that Zuma has resigned rests with the party’s president and its NEC.

She wrote: 'As a young girl, even in my wildest dreams, I never could have imagined this moment. Nobody in my family has ever had a portrait - there are no portraits of the Robinsons or the Shields from the South Side of Chicago. This is all a little bit overwhelming, especially when I think about all of the young people who will visit the National Portrait Gallery and see this, including so many young girls and young girls of color who don’t often see their images displayed in beautiful and iconic ways. I am so proud to help make that kind of history. But the fact is that none of this would be possible without the extraordinary artist and woman behind this portrait, @asherald. Thank you, Amy – it was a joy to work with you and get to know you.'

Chinese police have started using sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to identify suspected criminals

Chinese police have started?using sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to identify suspected criminals
Police in China have begun using sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to identify suspected criminals. The glasses are connected to an internal database of suspects, meaning officers can quickly scan crowds while looking for fugitives.
Critics however fear the technology will give even more power to the government. The sunglasses have already helped police capture seven suspects, according to Chinese state media.
Police used the new equipment at a busy train station in the central city of Zhengzhou to identify suspects. The seven people who were apprehended are accused of crimes ranging from hit-and-runs to human trafficking.
Police also identified 26 people who were using fake IDs, the ruling communist party's People's Daily newspaper reported.
The technology allows police officers to take a photograph of a suspicious individual and then compare it to pictures stored in an internal database. If there is a match, information such as the person's name and address will then be sent to the officer.

Winter Olympics security guards had to throw impersonators of US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un out of the Opening Ceremony on Friday.

The pair of hysterically accurate impersonators who had heads turning everywhere they went, with the Trump lookalike clad in a red "USA" cap and the Kim clone with the tyrannical leader's trademark look.

According to reports, their presence created a major stir, with fans and media members standing to take a look and snapping photographs of "Trump" and "Kim."

According to National Public Radio's Melissa Block, the impersonators were escorted from the stadium by security staff just behind the media section and thrown out of the arena but they weren't arrested.

In reality, President Trump and Kim Jung-Un aren't friends, they've not met before and they are both not in South Korea for the Winter Olympics.

Ghanaian government to install CCTVs in all police stations

Ghanaian government to install CCTVs in all police stations
Ghanaian government have concluded plans to install Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) at all police stations in the 216 districts in the country.
Ghanaian Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia announced the initiative as part of efforts to retool the Police Service and enhance security at police posts.
The initiative came after repeated attacks on police stations by criminal gangs. Recently, a gang of criminals attacked the Kwabenya District Police Headquarters, killing the officer on duty, and freeing some seven remand prisoners. The incident raised concerns about safety at police posts, with many criticising the government for failing to adequately equip the Service.

Hundreds of people to be out of jobs as OLX plans to shutdown in Nigeria and Kenya
According to reports, OLX, one of Africa’s leading e-commerce platforms, is shutting its Kenya and Nigeria outlets.
A source at the firm said the staff in both countries were formally informed of the decision on February 6, 2018 saying staff were reportedly notified of their termination beginning in March.
It is not clear the number of workers who have been affected by the decision.  OLX has been struggling to make its businesses in Kenya and Nigeria viable since it entered markets in 2012. In Kenya, many people use the platform to buy goods, sell livestock among others.
Last year, non-plastic bags was the third most searched for items on OLX after cars and real estate. This was just a week after the ban on plastic bags by the Ministry of Environment took effect. OLX has also invested in pricing intelligence technology while educating users on how to price their used cars.

Iconic Nigerian painting ?Tutu? to be sold for N100 million In the UK
An iconic Nigerian painting that's been missing for decades has been discovered in a north London flat.

The discovery of Ben Enwonwu’s 1974 masterpiece of the Ife princess Adetutu Ademiluyi, known as Tutu, has been touted as the “most significant discovery in contemporary African art in over 50 years”, Nigerian novelist Ben Okri told the Guardian.

The image of the painting became a symbol of national reconciliation in the country, where people hang posters of it on the walls of their homes.  It is not known how the piece came to be in north London, and the family who has it in their possession requested anonymity.

However, it will be sold at Bonhams in London later this month and is expected to go for over £200,000. Giles Peppiatt, director of modern African art at the auction house, made the discovery when he went round to the house.

Mozambique deports over 50 Ethiopians who entered the country illegally

Mozambique deports?over 50 Ethiopians who?entered the country illegally
Mozambique has deported more than 50 Ethiopians who entered the country illegally, in some cases after a six-week journey. All of them were detained in December after 40 were found in the bush in the central district of Gorongosa, and the others were arrested in other parts of the country.
They had made the long overland journey from Ethiopia, via Kenya and Tanzania, saying there in search of jobs and better living conditions. Some of the Ethiopians said they had been travelling for six weeks. One, Simion Sidebo, said he had paid more than $3,000 (£2,100) to transporters.
Mozambican National Immigration Services spokeswoman Cira Fernandes said the Ethiopians had no passports or other documents. Repatriations were costly: last year, the government spent more than $200,000 repatriating nearly 4,000 undocumented migrants, she said.
However, the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) agreed to carry the cost of deporting the latest batch, she said.  They flew back to Ethiopia from the capital, Maputo, and the IOM will help them "start up small-scale businesses to avoid becoming illegal immigrants again", Ms Fernandes said.

Lagos State government arrests 200 cart pushers

Lagos State government arrests 200 cart pushers
Lagos State Government has arrested no fewer than 200 cart pushers across all the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State for constituting environmental nuisances.
The arrest was made possible through a joint environmental sanitation raid by the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps whose enforcement officers simultaneously arrested cart pushers who pick refuse from citizens and dump wastes at roadsides, major roads and other public places across the State.
Speaking on the arrest at Safety Arena, Bolade, Oshodi, the Board Chairman of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps, DIG Isreal Ajao said a cleaner and healthier Lagos remains a top priority of the state government in its transition from a mega city to a smart city.
“If a government is transcending from mega-city to smart city, all the components must be there. The key component of a Smart City is a clean and healthy environment”, he stated.
He said indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, drainages, highways and everywhere will not be tolerated as the government has committed a lot of human and material resources to ensure Lagos remains a healthy habitation for all through the Cleaner Lagos Initiative.
The Chairman called on residents of the State to stop patronizing cart pushers, but rather support the authorized waste manager, which is the VisionScape.
“Residents of the State should buy-in to the Cleaner Lagos initiative and sustainable environment. Of course, you know without a healthy body you cannot have a healthy life. Nigerian actor turned security guard in the US, Femi Ogedengbe blasts Nigerian politician and youths shaming him, says he makes more as a guard than an actor in Nigeria

Nigerian actor turned security guard in the US, Femi Ogedengbe blasts Nigerian politician and youths shaming him, says he makes more as a guard than an actor in Nigeria (video)
Nigeria's famous movie producer and actor, Femi Ogedengbe has published viral video in which he addressed a lot of issues affecting the country.
The former actor who now works as a security guard in the United States called out the youths shaming him for his new job and said he makes better money from it than he did as an entertainer in Nigeria. He disclosed that while he was in Nigeria, he worried about how to feed his kids each day but that isn't the case anymore.

He also called out Nigerian leaders, especially President Buhari for the current state of the country. The father, who welcomed twins in 2014 and named them Nollywood and Hollywood, said President Buhari is not fulfilling the promises he made to Nigerians. He also called out politicians like Rotimi Amaechi and also the "Godfathers".
He said: "Buhari, I don't know how you are governing this country. This country, Nigeria, take  a look at it. Are you proud of what is happening in the country? You came in with high hopes. You came in with all the promises in the world that the moment you come into office this is going to happen, that is going to happen. But we all know what happened when you came into office."
He added: "And now people are dying in Benue. Your tribesmen are killing people by their numbers and you've not really gone out to address that issue. And you say people should not agitate for their own self rule, they should not secede, they should not clamour for restructuring... it cannot happen."
Addressing Nigerian youths, Ogedengbe said: "It's a shame, I don't know when this country is going to be better. And all we the youths do, we go on social media, attack each other. You don't see any youth see any good thing in what the other person is doing. We are always looking for that thing, that fault. We are always looking for the fault in what the other person is doing."
He also spoke about his job as a security guard in the US. He said it pays him better than Nigerian jobs and has helped him get hisimmediate family out of Nigeria while still working to help other family members escape. He also pointed out that more people are looking for ways to escape but lack of funds is the only thing keeping them back in Nigeria.
"I was respected like I was the king in Tanzania, that means I know my work but what did my work fetch me in Nigeria? Nothing. My son will be eating in the morning and I'll  be thinking of what he and the rest of them will eat in the night. And you're saying I'm doing security. If only you know how much comes with that. If only you know the benefits."
